Famous Sakura① Usuzumi Sakura

Usuzumi Sakura(Pale Ink Cherry Blossom)

薄墨桜

This sakura tree is said to have been planted by Emperor Keitai in 467 AD. If that’s true, the Usuzumi sakura must be over 1,500 years old.
Unfortunately, Yu-pon couldn’t visit it, as sakura trees tend to bloom around the same time, and the flowering period lasts only about a week.
What makes this sakura especially unique is the way its blossoms change color:
when in bud, they are a delicate light pink; at full bloom, they turn white; and as the petals fall, they take on the hue of pale black ink.
In fact, the name “Usuzumi sakura” comes from this soft ink-like shade.

  • Girth of the trunk: 9.91 m
  • Height: 16.3 m
  • Spread of branches: 26.90 m (east–west), 20.2 m (north–south)

To fully appreciate its color transitions, you may need to visit multiple times to see each stage.
This sakura tree reached the end of its natural lifespan in 1948, but it was restored through the efforts of many people and is now recognized as a protected plant species.
