Train 2:Kyoto
From KYOTO鉄道博物館 RailRoad Museum

Kyoto railway museum for railway Otaku
The Kyoto Railway Museum opened near Kyoto Station on April 29, 2016.It was exciting news for railway enthusiasts!
Yu-pon would love to share their experience from visiting the museum.
Yu-pon’s impression from visiting the museum is that the Kyoto Railway Museum seems to have been built with the same concept as the Tokyo Railway Museum. Of course, West Japan Railway Company was formerly part of the same organization as East Japan Railway Company under the Japanese National Railways.
The exhibitions in this museum were opened in a similar way to the Tokyo Railway Museum, featuring Japan’s railway history, vehicle structures, and a railway vehicle factory on the first floor. The second floor showcases a railway diorama, operational systems, driving simulators, and exhibits on life and the railway.
The mini train for kids also runs outside the museum building. In the restaurant, you can even order an ekiben meal, just like the packed meals sold at railway stations.
The specialties of this museum include:
- The experience of boarding a steam locomotive
- A roundhouse platform for locomotives
- An exhibition featuring locomotives in operation
Additionally, you can witness the direction switching of locomotives in the marshaling yard.
Yu-pon felt that this was the only museum in Japan where you could board a real moving locomotive and experience the nostalgic marshaling yard where train dispatchers once worked.
The Kyoto Railway Museum is a must-visit destination for all locomotive enthusiasts.
The Shinkansen can be fun, but for a geek (otaku) with sympathy with a passion for old locomotives, this is the ultimate place to be!
There is steam locomotive types ranging from single driving wheels to the D-class (which has four driving wheels).
